A Chey Christie and Demetric Bennett sighting
(this comes from the Lexington Herald-Leader 7/17/05)

Happy Birthday To John Pelphrey. The member of UK's
Unforgettables turns 37 on Monday.

Pelphrey, whose UK career spanned the Eddie Sutton and
Rick Pitino eras, has been head coach at South Alabama for three seasons.
He's compiled a record of 36-48.

South Alabama compiled a 10-18 record last season. But
there's reason for optimism with transfers Chey Christie (from Clemson)
and Demetric Bennett (SMU) eligible after sitting out last season. A third
player, Michael Phillips, returns after sitting out last season for
academic reasons.

"We're really looking to make some progress this
year," Pelphrey said.

Pelphrey noted the good fortune he's had in
basketball. He played for Bill Mike Runyon at Paintsville High. Then he played for
two future Hall of Famers at UK. That good fortune continued, he said,
with having Joe Gottfried as South Alabama athletic director.

Gottfried, the father of Alabama Coach Mark Gottfried,
is a former coach and a longtime resident of Alabama. He gave Pelphrey a
thorough reading of the South Alabama program and knowledgeable advice.

"A kind of comfort level with who you work for is important," Pelphrey said.
"A lot of times, the AD, just like coaches, has aspirations of moving up. I
don't think that is the case with him."
Pelphrey and his wife, Tracy, have two children, a son Jaxson, 8, and a daughter Grace, 5.
